Crash CollinsCrash was born in Nashville Tennessee and moved to Houston in 1962. He graduated from Lamar High School and while attending the University of Houston he started to earn his living playing bass guitar. Pretty soon he ditched academia in favor of a musician's life, playing in the band with Johnny & Edgar Winter, B.J Thomas and the Dick Clark Tour; and writing and publishing songs.

KLOL-101 at the Rice Hotel was the first rock station in Houston to use the free-form format, and in 1971 "Crash in your Dash" made history in those early years of vinyl radio by mixing and playing his own show. Many years later the voice that "Kept Houston Between the Ditches" would last be heard on KZFX 107.5 on "The Bob & Crash Show". Crash was active for over four decades and could be heard on six radio stations...KUHF, KLOL (3 separate times!), KILT, KULF, KNUZ and KZFX...what a ride!

Crash CollinsAs well as radio, Crash released a Christmas album; appeared on numerous local TV shows including 101 RockPlace and Crash's Jam; had a long career in the voice talent business; and appeared at many local clubs including The Old Plantation, Bentleys, Yucatan Liquor Stand, Safari Club and Randy's.

Throughout his long career Crash was always a major fundraiser for people and causes. He was the auctioneer at many, many charity events and golf tournaments, and was declared #1 Volunteer of the Year for The University of Texas Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital in 1988. The 101.1 frequency signed on in 1947 as KTRH-FM. In 1970, "I'm Free" by The Who ushered in a new format and call sign to the 101.1 frequency and The KLOL Legend was born. In the early days, KLOL was known as "Mother's Family" and later "K101" and utilized what would be termed a "free form format". A major contributor to the early and ongoing success of KLOL was the laid back perennial DJ Maurice "Crash" Collins.
